I found a possible deal on a 1st model for $100, but it doesn’t have a controller. Can I use a controller from a 360? What are the various models and what does each one bring to the table? I pretty much want to play the latest version of Forza and not much else.

There is no reason to get the other levels other than for storage. Most o riginal Ones have only 500g vs One S or One X has 1TB or more. The others have better graphics but unless you have a tv to run HDR not worth it.

Can be fixed with a external hard drive ~$70

If it is wireless, no the 360 wont work. The Wired might but I dont think so. Just get some cheap knock off or used controller.

I don’t believe you can use 360 controllers with the 1, although, if I’m wrong I need to know so I can use my 360 controllers with my 1. I’ve had my xbone since July 2014 and it’s been good to me.

First gen is fine, if you don’t care about high-res gaming. The X provides 4k and HDR support. The S is more efficient but otherwise similar (might have slightly different ports). You’ll need a new controller (they are currently on sale for $40 at Amazon and Walmart): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LPZM7VI That controller is the new model with Bluetooth so it can be used wirelessly with Windows 10 PC and I think some other Bluetooth devices (phones, tablets, Steam link, etc.), the first-gen controllers would only work wirelessly with the xbox itself because they didn’t support Bluetooth.

You might be able to find a used cheaper at a thrift store.

One thing to watch out for is whether the console is banned from xbox live (not sure if MS still does this, but it was an issue with used consoles in the 360 era).

1) You cannot use a 360 controller with the One

2) The original model is the least powerful version

The S adds a bit more power and support for fancy features as HDR. Not a huge difference but does provide slightly smoother performance in some games.

The Pro is the beastly 4k capable version of the Xbox one. Maximum power but doesn’t really get you much benefit unless you have a 4k TV.

I have an original model and it serves me well. There are rumors that some developers have started targeting the S model as a baseline system but I haven’t seen any firm evidence of that. Forza Horizon 4 might be the first hint I have seen of this practice. It has noticable lag at times but that might just be the continued downward trend in quality of the entire series since Forza Motorsport 4.

I don’t have a 4k set  yet; my normal TV is actually just 720p, although I mostly watch TV on a 27" monitor attached to my WMC PC. I do have a $20 42" TV sitting in my entryway that I haven’t got around to hooking up yet; I figure I’ll use that one for gaming once I dig out my living room.

You can snag a new controller on Amazon for about 40 bucks right now.

I have an original 1TB that's served me well for the last 5 years. I dont notice any loss of clarity in terms of graphics, although loading and lag is noticeable in the latest round of games (FM7 and FH4. I'd imagine most 2019 titles as well). However it is still a perfectly playable experience.

I know you say the others have better graphics. T he One X’s graphic’s card is way better than the original; better detail, better frame rates. The original’s frame rate dropped significantly on just 1080. The new one has no issues there and is future proof (if you plan on getting a bigger TV in the near future).

That said if you are okay with slightly subpar graphics and frame rates, the original one is good, but you should be able to get one for $100 including the controller and possibly a game. I see them all the time on my local facebook market place (all in working conditions.

I have actually been considering buying that. I think I have a powerful enough peecee to do it (i7 3770, 32GB, GTX 1080, etc). I had a blast messing around with the demo setup at Fry’s Electronics, although I was bumping into a few things. I just spotted a used setup with an Xbox One controller for $200, and t b at seemed like a pretty sweet deal.

It’s really  just a box of spare parts, Craigslist finds and cheap Micro Center return bits, but it holds its own. I’m pretty pleased with it, especially given how little was spent on it, relatively speaking. Patience is the key.

While I agree on the graphics for the Xbone X and S are significantly better , im in the boat of I dont care as im running an old LCD that runs 720. And I wasnt about to pay more money for something I can’t run anyway. Though it was more, unless its the next gen platform , fuck spending more money.

Even so for 100 bucks to play current games you cant go wrong.

for sure! i have a somewhat similar rig, HP Elite 8300 i7 3770 16GB RAM GTX750 with SSD + 2 HDs. It’s holding the fort down until parts for my next build come.

Oh yeah? I like never upgrade my GPU because it always seems like a waste of money, but I do get annoyed at not being able to mod console games. Maybe I should scope CL for down-on-their-luck bitcoin miners trying to shed GPUs

Mine actually started out as an 8300 until the motherboard fried, probably because of the power supply adapter I was using. Everything else was OK so I just found a Gigabyte motherboard on eBay and a case on CL and transplanted everything.

nice nice... sad thing about the 8300 is it uses proprietary PSU and mobo but the case itself is pretty decent for reusing!

I don’t know about reusing the case. Mounting an ATX power supply isn’t easy; I think mine was held in by 1.5 screws. The HD rails require special screws. There’s only 3 5.25" bays. And I doubt that it uses a standard ATX backplate. Too much proprietary crap.

I did buy another 8300, this time a cheap i5, for use as my hackintosh, and it runs fine. I just don’t know if I should drop $25 for a replacement mobo and get the other one working, or if I should just cut my losses and move on. I did build another i5 system recently out of some old junk from a friend and a lot of pieces from a $60 CL find (it was an older AMD system, but I bought it for the case, drives, PS and GTX 750) , but haven’t fired it up yet. It uses standard parts and should be easier to work on and troubleshoot as compared to the 8300. But as you are well aware, it’s kinda hard to walk away from an almost complete system when it just need a couple of parts to be finished ...

The orginal Xbox one will work fine, but $100 without a controller is a bit steep. In m y area $100 with a controller and a game or two would be about right.

On this rig I do a lot of simulation, mostly flight, and a good GPU is critical. I finally decided to spring for a returned 1080 when I needed to spend a certain amount on a credit card to get some points for an airline. I’m trying to pay it down quickly, but I had to throw a surprise tax bill on it the other day  so my progress was undone...

Good to know.  I didn’t realize these things had become so cheap, but I guess it is half a decade old by now so it shouldn't come as a surprise.

Slightly anecdotal evidence, I have owned a early one since around they came out.  Bout it in 2013ish  and it seems to crash constantly regardless of game, all my buddies have the redisgned ones that were like a refresh but aren’t x or s and they seem to never have crashing issues. Outside of the crashing though nothing has broke or gone wrong on mine. Just have to reboot sometimes so for $100 now, just kinda depends on how much you might be annoyed by occasionally having that verse paying more to not have that

1080? Why would you even consider a console! The only issue is the latest Forza games require dx 12, which means you have to use Windows 10.

I have a $20 wired controller I got on Amazon that works well, I prefer wired but microsoft no longer sells first party wired controllers afaik, but when I play I sit pretty close to the tv and I'm tired of rechargeable battery packs crapping out. Plus the triggers on my oem controllers were losing sensitivity.

So you’re telling me that there’s a PC version of Forza 7? Well, if that’s the case I guess I don’t need a console. Can I do multiplayer with console players? I’ll have to research it and make sure my PC can handle it, but I would expect that it should.

these things are quite nice quality too! though you can actually fit in an ATX power supply... I did do a build in a similar HP tower a while ago

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

HP/Compaq have been using this tower design for over 10 years apparently. You can find the HD screws for a few bucks on eBay.

An ATX  PS will fit, but the mounting holes don’t line up with the case (unless I had it upside down...) That other case looks a little closer to standard ATX, but I’ve already got an almost complete 8300 I could make operational again with just a cheap mobo. But do I need another? That’s a question best not asked of a computer hoarder like myself...

Yep, both Forza 7 and Horizon 4 (maybe 3 too) are available on PC. If I’m not mistaken they do have cross play.

Edit: I think they also brought Halo to PC as well.
